shoulder mount

I love posting our Featured Student! This time, our Featured Student of the Month is Jen Cardigan! Or Kamikaze Jen as we like to call her. Everyone in the studio loves Jen. Her pole motivation is incredibly infectious. Jen is one of our highest level students and has worked damned hard for it. We have never seen anyone without fear like Jen. She will try anything that you throw at her, and to be honest, the more dangerous, the more she wants to do it! On the flip side, we have never seen anyone so dozy either. Jen regularly trips over her own toes, over invisible obstacles, has actually magically fell from one room through to another and generally just narrowly escapes death each week. We all love Jen. Always so friendly, fun and bringing a great atmosphere with her to every class, here is Jen’s interview….

How long have you been a Pole Physique student?

Almost 3 years

What is your favourite class type and why?

I can’t decide between tricks and curriculum… I love tricks because I love learning new things, but at the same time I love curriculum because I get to really work hard to perfect all the moves in my routine for graduation. Plus there’s the added bonus of having Tiff there to help you when you need it and to give alternatives if something just isn’t working for you. I also love being around all the other students and seeing them progress over time. The support you get from everyone once you finally nail that move is amazing!

What is your favourite pole move and why?

My favourite has to be shoulder mount and I think it’s because I worked so hard to get it. I like how challenging it can become just by changing the position of your legs (my ultimate goal is to just deadlift right into it but considering I can only get my feet a few inches off the ground when I try it, it’s a loooooong way off). I also like how you can convey your own style in the shoulder mount. I tend to just throw myself up there – job done – but I like watching others using a bit of flare to make it look nicer.

What is your nemisis and why?

Freestyling is my number one nemesis. Closely followed by anything that requires even an ounce of flare. I’m level 3 now so I’ve done quite a few routines and loads of moves, but every time we do a warm up in class my mind goes blank and I end up only doing about 4 different moves within the 2 minutes… I find it so difficult to come up with things on my own on the spot. Show me something and I’ll copy it as well as I can, but if you ask me to freestyle I’ll just stand there pretty awkwardly for the majority of the time. It’s definitely something I need to and want to work on this year!

What do you wear to class? Is this what you want to wear?

I usually wear Bad Kitty Brazil shorts and a vest top. This is pretty much what I want to wear, I just need to buy more!

How long did you think about taking a pole class before you actually took the plunge?

It took me about 2 seconds to decide! Seeing Pole Physique advertised online was the first I had heard of pole dancing classes and as soon as I saw it I immediately wanted to give it a go. I signed up straight away and it was the best decision I’ve ever made!

Why pole at Pole Physique?

I’ve only ever been to Pole Physique but I’ve never felt the need to go anywhere else. I get everything I need from the classes here. Everyone is so supportive of each other and really friendly. Even if you’re going into a class where you don’t know anyone, you quickly feel part of that class. For about 2 and a half years I went to the same Thursday class, but this year I’ve had to change due to work. I was really nervous about going to a different class where I might not know anyone, but I left that class feeling like I’d always been a part of it.
I like that we can be left alone to work on things, but that Tiff will make a point in going around to see every single person in the class to offer one to one help to them. She also regularly teaches us new things as a group that we can work on together.
Another reason to pole at Pole Physique is the flexibility that’s offered. You can buy pretty much as many classes as you want and you get to choose what kind of classes they are.
Also the fact that Tiff stays late every night to train shows how dedicated she is to being the best she can be, which in turn makes her a better teacher to all of us.

What are your Pole Goals for 2015?

My main goal for 2015 is to perform on stage. Just doing graduation routines in class in front of friends scares the life out of me, so this is a huge step out of my comfort zone. Unfortunately I had to pull out of the showcase and didn’t get a space at Incredipole so I’m not sure when it’ll happen…
I also want to work on my flexibility because I have a really stiff back and shoulders so it makes some moves more difficult than they have to be.
Aaaand lastly I want to nail Iron X this year!

What do your friends and family reckon to this pole malarky?

My friends and family have been nothing less than supportive. A lot of my friends want to give it a try but just haven’t taken the plunge yet. Anytime I show my Mum photos or videos of me doing anything she always wants me to send it to her so she can show it to her friends!

Is there anyone you haven’t told? Why?

Nope! It’s actually usually one of the first things I share when I meet new people… I’ve never had any negative reactions to it which is why I’m so open. Hopefully that’ll never happen!

Advice you would give to those still not signed up?

Stop thinking about it and just do it! It was honestly the best decision I ever made to sign up.
